Austin-Westran is the finest provider of trailer supports to the domestic trailer industry. Used to support a freestanding trailer or position a trailer for hookup or release from a power unit, the Company’s trailer supports are fabricated from both round and square mechanical tubing that is cut to length, robotically welded, assembled, and painted.

As an efficient, experienced manufacturer and the only producer of cost-effective cylindrical trailer supports in the industry, Austin-Westran enjoys a strong market position and has earned a reputation for reliability, innovation, and cost effectiveness. Westran Corp. invented the trailer support in 1933 and pioneered innovations such as round trailer supports and the “cushion foot” base.

In 1991, the Company introduced the first major innovation in the trailer support industry in over 30 years with the introduction of the patented Constant Mesh trailer support gearing system. This innovation eliminates shifting problems inherent in conventional, two-speed gearboxes, allowing more positive, smoother gear shifting when raising or lowering the trailer support. Approximately 50% of Austin-Westran’s trailer supports are sold into the after market through OEM parts distribution programs, independent warehouse distributors, and marketing groups.

Austin-Westran has pioneered and/or patented several essential features of trailer landing gear including our Constant Mesh gearing, and we are the only manufacturers to offer both round and square product. Using high tensile steel, we offer the lightest weight product on the market, and have the fastest overall use speed: 3.2 turns per inch in high gear and 19.1 per inch in low gear. Our computer-aided design utilizes the latest finite element analysis technology, coupled with our five year warranty.

Hutchens Industries, Inc., is a leading manufacturer of trailer suspensions, sub-frames and a wide variety of steel fabrications and castings. The company was established in 1950 by its founder, C. Ted Hutchens. It was an outgrowth of Mr. Hutchens’ prior experience as a manufacturer of Cargo Tanks for trucks and trailers. Hutchens operated at a number of Springfield sites and, in 1962, launched its first major expansion by opening its ‘Marshfield Steel’ plant in nearby Marshfield, Missouri. The company grew rapidly and, in 1969, built an additional manufacturing facility in Mansfield, Missouri. In 1974, a steel foundry operating in Springfield as Grand Foundries, Inc., was relocated to Mansfield where it became the Mans-Steel Foundry Division. In 1978, a steel processing plant was erected in Seymour, Missouri. Strategically located between Marshfield and Mansfield, its mission was to supply steel to both plants. While continuing and expanding its role as ‘steel processor’ for the entire company, Seymour grew to become the center for suspension component manufacture and finished product distribution, as well. The growth of Seymour resulted in the closing of the Marshfield operations in the late ’80s.

The past three years have certainly been rather trying and difficult times for the heavy-duty trucking industry, as well as the overall US economy – but rather than get caught in the negative aspects of this downturn, Hutchens drove through with steady focus and determination. The company invested in additional manufacturing capabilities through improved tooling, concentrated design techniques, expanded capacity, and production efficiencies. By targeting quality management programs, Hutchens was able to upgrade its certification to ISO 9000-2000. The company also initiated the steps towards implementing an ERP system and launching the program with Navision, a Microsoft subsidiary.

Hutchens remains a closely held, family owned concern. Jeffrey C. Hutchens is its president and CEO succeeding his father, Lewis G. Hutchens who died in 1985. Lewis Hutchens had likewise succeeded his father, the company’s founder, C. Ted Hutchens upon his death in 1968. The company’s products are shipped worldwide. Its customers include most of the trailer manufacturers, large and small, throughout North America, several other suspension builders and a broad range of firms using fabricated and cast steel products.

The Merritt Equipment Company

In March of 1951, the Merritt family purchased a small welding shop in Portland, Oregon that also repaired and built trailers. Merritt Automotive soon became known more for their new high quality wooden stake bodies and trailers than for their welding and repairs.

By 1959, Merritt had begun working almost entirely with aluminum. The operation moved into a new headquarters on North Union Ave. where a series of design innovations and assembly techniques were implemented that would revolutionize the livestock and grain trailer industry.

The first all-aluminum livestock trailers were built using aluminum front frames and rear undercarriages. The Merritt punched-side design provided more strength to the aluminum sheets and created an air vortex that increased airflow throughout the trailer. These techniques also made possible a “monocoque” design, or what is commonly known as “frameless uni-body” construction, which leaves the interior almost smooth contributing to bruise-free livestock transport.

Merritt’s unique punch-panel construction called for a higher level of quality control and in 1965 a 12,500 square foot addition was made to the Portland assembly plant. In 1967, a new facility was added in Bakersfield, CA and in 1970 a sales office and repair shop was opened in Denver, CO. An addition to the Denver facility in 1977 fostered the assembly of semis and doubles for grain.

In 1980, at the new factory in Denver, Merritt began building the new Cattle Drive trailer featuring a tapered 1″ side post that provided the largest interior width in the trailer industry.

The main Denver factory assumed all semi-trailer and truck accessory manufacturing in 1984 and became the corporate headquarters for the company. Since relocating to Denver, four expansions to the factory and service building have been completed and Merritt now enjoys more than 170,000 square feet of manufacturing, design and service space to meet your needs.

Over the last 45 years, the Merritt punch-side method of trailer construction has stood the test of time and earned the company a reputation for quality. This design has proven to be so superior to slat and post designs that all livestock trailer manufacturers have copied, but not duplicated, Merritt’s punch-side construction. While many in the livestock trailer industry continue to experiment with plastics, glues, and other approaches to improve their designs, Merritt’s method is evolving in ways that further refine our proven construction technique.

Merritt’s goals are to help make you, our customer, more profitable and to develop a lasting partnership. To do this we must provide you with an affordable trailer with a maximum payload capacity and a low operating cost for the transportation of healthy, bruise-free livestock.

We believe the real value of a trailer is determined over it’s work life. When the day comes for you to sell or trade your Merritt trailer, consider your total life cycle cost. You will realize that your Merritt trailer, cab guard or tool box was built with an uncompromising dedication to quality for lasting durability and it held it’s value.

Building innovative products that provide longevity, quality and value have been and will continue to be our goal. The Goldline livestock trailer is a working testimony to this goal and continues to be the standard against which others are measured. Merritt Equipment is proud to play a part in Agribusiness on the move.

It all began in 1973 when gasoline shortages set people worrying about the price of fuel. That’s when Joseph FitzGerald found a niche for his 1965 discovery of the benefits of changing the shape of the upper portion of the trailer front wall. Sales manager for Carrier Transicold in 1965, FitzGerald suggested relocating the refrigeration evaporator to the outside front wall of the trailer as a way of providing his customers with more cargo space. Traditionally mounted inside the trailer, engineers for Transicold created a new design mounting the evaporator outside the trailer front wall. The original design encased the evaporator within a rectangular box and FitzGerald further suggested cutting the corners of the box at an angle to improve aerodynamics. Road testing of the new design brought to light unanticipated benefits, the driver reported he believed the trailer pulled better than before and that mileage had improved. FitzGerald’s suggestion proved to benefit two-fold, increasing available cargo space and reducing trailer drag.

FitzGerald consulted with leading aerodynamicists to perfect his discovery, but it was not until the oil embargo of 1973 that the industry saw a need to reduce fuel usage. And when they did, FitzGerald was ready and that’s when his sales experience paid off. FitzGerald single handedly let the nation know that changing the trailer shape would mean big dollar savings and he did it one door at a time. He became the founding father of the world’s first production aerodynamic add-on for trailers and with his son, Jim FitzGerald, trained expert in mold development, they went on to develop over 145 different aerodynamic configurations.

The largest applications are in providing increased safety and durability to the trucking industry through superior flooring and delivering better quality kiln dried lumber to the forest products industry through consistently uniform stacking sticks.

Innovation, reliability and service are the hallmarks of the firm. Through a vast knowledge of the world’s timber resources and the specific properties of their wood, OHC’s personnel solve problems and create opportunities for their customers.

OHC innovated and remains the only the manufacturer of Road Load Tested® Flooring (RLT) for the trucking industry. RLT® Flooring can double the life of flatbed trailer floors that must endure the ravages of weather, loading and unloading and thousands of hours on the roads.

OHC pioneered the use of lumber noted for its extreme hardness and durability in trailer flooring more than 30 years ago. In addition to supplying lumber as RLT® Flooring, the firm provides random length truck flooring that meets strict quality, strength and availability standards. The firm’s truck flooring services include designing floors for new trailers and preparing designs for used trailers that need to be refloored.

Stacking sticks supplied by OHC help lumberyards that kiln dry lumber produce higher quality products. The firm’s stacking sticks are provided in close dimensions to ensure even stacking in the kilns so lumber does not wrap. They are inventoried at OHC’s warehouse for JIT shipment.

At Reflexite our business is the Management of Light. Our growth strategy is to combine our core capabilities in optical engineering, microreplication, and polymer processing to create new, differentiated products for global markets. Current and future priority markets are reflective products, display optics, lighting optics, instrumentation optics, and telecom optics.

Company History – In 1963, company founders Hugh and Bill Rowland bought the rights to develop a new retro-reflective technology from a company called Luce Reflexite, Inc.

Locations – Reflexite locations globally.

Employee Stock Ownership Plan – The ESOP provides the proper environment for all employee-owners to positively influence the company’s performance and consequently its value.

Employment – We provide outstanding opportunities for employee-owners to develop their potential and build a career in a challenging and rewarding entrepreneurial environment.

The Management of Light business concept provides focus for our efforts and a strategy for creating the future. The three Reflexite fundamentals, technology, ownership, and quality are what drive us to excel.

Reflexite was founded based on its unique proprietary technology and the value that the Technology can create for customers. The Technology embodies three elements: optical engineering, microreplication, and polymer processing. All of our products are uniquely engineered, all involve optical microstructures, and all products are made from various plastic substrates.

The second fundamental, Ownership, was created in 1985. The ESOP was formed to transfer stock from the founding brothers to the employees. Over the years, the ESOP has grown to be the largest shareholder in the company and all employee-owners throughout the company are members of the Reflexite ESOP. It is through their ownership in the company that employees participate in the financial rewards of business success, governance of the corporation, and participation in decision making that effects their work lives. Ownership also creates pride. Pride in our products, our services, and our business integrity.

The third fundamental that was added in 1989 is Quality. All Reflexite employee-owners are trained in the Reflexite quality system and continuous improvement. In this way all of us have a convenient means to improve the company that we all own.

Keep clicking and you’ll see; Reflexite is Visibly Better™.

Provider of reliable and affordable load scale systems that support the productivity, profitability, and safety for the commercial transport industry.

Our Story

In most countries around the world, the commercial transport industry must maintain specific weight limits by law as they travel between destinations. To ensure that all operators are abiding by these laws, there are government owned weigh stations located around the world. If load weights are over the limit, operators pay hefty fines.

Right Weigh was born from the need to have a simple and affordable solution for monitoring weight loads. In 1998, Sid Campbell developed Right Weigh’s first onboard load scale. As a fleet owner and operator in Alaska, Sid used his scales on his own trucks and trailers. He recognized that many of his peers were also in search for the same solution. Since then, Right Weigh has become the go to supplier of on board load scales.

Our Promise

As Right Weight continues to grow, we will continue to provide reliable products at the most affordable pricing in the industry. AS our number one priority, we will always provide the highest quality customer service.

All Standen’s plants are fired by clean burning natural gas. We also recapture, scrub and recycle quenching oils and other materials used in the manufacturing process.

Standen’s routinely recycles all it’s paper and consumables. It’s important to us to do our part to ensure a cleaner world for future generations.

Since its inception in 1973, Symplastics has provided high quality processed thermoplastics for a diverse range of customers requiring plastics, with unique characteristics. Those customers can be divided into three markets, each with its own processing criteria and demanding specifications.

From the beginning, Symplastics has been dedicated to offering the stationery and loose-leaf industry the highest quality polyethylene loose-leaf products anywhere. We believe our graphic ready plastic sheeting is second to none in its durability and its versatility for an unlimited number of specialized uses. Whether you want custom designed finished goods or ready-to-assemble components, Symplastics is ready to meet your needs.

When we acquired the Spray Guard® spray suppressant mud flap product line from Monsanto in 1987, we burst into the trucking business and helped improve truck safety to the benefit of both truck manufactures and fleet operators. Since then we have responded to customer requests by offering a complete line of decorated and plain mud flaps, as well as trailer scuff liners, and Sym Mat® step mats for trucks. We have grown to be the principal supplier of mud flaps to the North America’s tractor manufacturing industry, while continuing to serve the aftermarket through a continental network of established heavy duty parts distributors.

Our third and most dynamic market, the engineered plastics market, is served by our Ramex® Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene sheet and rod production facilities. Since we developed the world’s first ram extruder for making UHMW-PE sheet 48″ wide in 1985, we have continually reinvested in our production capabilities, by doubling capacity in 1992 with a second ram extruder, and doubling them again in 1996 with the addition of a multi-mold compression molding press. In making those investments, Symplastics is in the unique position of offering excellent thickness tolerances, superb sheet surface quality, and the ability to provide non-standard sheet lengths, like 12 ft. or 3.5m., through a complete UHMW-PE product line.

Symplastics has not been content to simply maintain double digit capacity and sales growth. We have invested in plastics research, environmental excellence, and ISO quality standards. We are proud of our commitment to sound environmental practices. Our Enviro-flex® grade of polyethylene sheeting contains 90% post-consumer waste, evidence of our success in finding appropriate uses for recycled plastic products. In addition , Symplastics is on the forefront of reprocessing used UHMW-PE resin into products suitable for less demanding plastic lining applications. These products, together with the environmentally friendly operations at our Orangeville plant has earned Symplastics the Environmental Choice award from the Canadian Federal Government.

The strong TSE Brakes, Inc. that you see today is the culmination of 40 years of progress in spring brake innovation. The company’s origin dates back to the early 1960’s, when the Smith family started out as young, determined remanufacturers of spring brake chambers. In 1970, TSE developed its own new design based on experience gained through many years of remanufacturing and testing. TSE created the Omnibrake family of completely new units that changed the industry. Today, TSE no longer remanufactures, as its focus has shifted to the OEM market. . In recent years, TSE has added one of the most extensive lines of disk brake actuators in the industry. As the standard equipment choice among a growing list of new truck and trailer manufacturers worldwide, the popularity of TSE’s Omnibrake has taken off, generating record sales.

The company has grown over the years because of its approach to research and development. This innovative approach began by taking apart over three million of the competition’s failed spring brake chambers that had been returned to TSE as cores and examining their failures. From this data, TSE’s Engineering Team has built into the Omnibrake a long list of patented innovations to reduce or eliminate nearly all of the serious causes of premature brake chamber failure. Today, TSE’s R&D consists of a rigorous program of lab and field testing.

The greatest result of TSE’s commitment to R&D was the creation of a true “double life” unit built to deliver years of reliable service. The Omnibrake’s major components all enjoy service life cycles that far exceed the recommendations of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE.

In tough SAE salt spray testing, the Omnibrake’s exclusive electrodeposition coating delivered 1,000 hours of protection, greatly surpassing the SAE’s recommendation of only 96 hours. The unit’s rubber diaphragms easily cycle over two million times, more than double the SAE’s one million cycle recommendation. And where the SAE says a spring brake chamber’s main power spring should last a recommended 200,000 cycles, TSE’s Omnibrake consistently tests out at over 500,000 cycles.

The TSE Brakes of today is a much larger operation than in those first few years. With over 350 employees, a chain of warehouses across North America, and it’s own private fleet of company over-the-road trucks, TSE has blossomed into a contender in the worldwide spring brake marketplace. Due to its focus on stringent quality controls, TSE Brakes is certified as QS 9000 and ISO 9001 compliant. Meeting these high worldwide quality standards means that TSE can become standard equipment on major power equipment manufacturers both in the U.S. and abroad.

Along with Chairman of the Board and Founder Ted Smith, his son Greg Smith and son-in-law, Steve Lum get involved in the day-to-day task of supplying new spring brakes to more than 30 countries around the globe. Greg is President and Steve is Vice President – Finance. TSE enjoys a stable workforce made up of reliable people, many of which have been with TSE for more than 30 years.

Whiting, the original manufacturer of roll up Doors for the Transportation Industry, began operations in 1953. Since that time, we have concentrated on designing doors that are easy to install, operate and maintain.

In 1953, a customer pulled into the yard of a small garage door manufacturer in Akron, New York. He asked the owner, T.C. Whiting, if he and his sons could fit a garage door onto his truck body.

That simple request began what has amounted to a 100 million dollar roll-up door industry. Today, Whiting Door Manufacturing Corp. is still in Akron, headed by brothers Don and Lauren Whiting.

Since introducing the roll-up door to the trucking and transportation industry, Whiting has grown to have four factory locations across the U.S., as well as licensee affiliates who manufacture under the Whiting nameplate around the globe. In fact, in nearly any corner of the world, it would be difficult to pass the day without spotting a Whiting door.
