Utility Announces Sustainability Standards in Manufacturing

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif., March 23, 2012 – Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, the industry’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner® curtainsided trailers is pleased to announce its current sustainability initiatives in trailer manufacturing.

Utility is committed to leading the industry with sustainability policies and strategies to minimize environmental impact on future generations. Through Utility’s continuing efforts to aggressively reduce air emissions, the company has reduced over 20% of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and over 87% of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPS).

Utility’s initiatives include the use of low or zero VOC paints, undercoatings, caulks, and the use of wood products supplied from the Sustainability Forestry Initiative Program (SFI) growers. “We are fortunate to work with suppliers who share our commitment to social responsibility,” said Craig Bennett, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing for Utility. “This has helped us to progressively improve our entire manufacturing process and provide even greater environmental efficiencies for our customers.”

Utility’s 4000D-X Composite® dry van was the industry’s first trailer to be EPA SmartWay® verified and is designed to be one of the lightest and most fuel efficient in the industry. Additionally, Utility’s SAE tested and SmartWay verified 100% recyclable Utility Advanced Side Skirt 120A (USS-120A) provides a minimum of 5% fuel savings, and can be used with low rolling resistance tires on dry vans to achieve CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliance for California operations.* Utility is currently investigating additional technologies to increase fuel savings and reduce emissions by even greater numbers.
